GPS Tracker for OwnCloud

Nico Mittenzwey
Hi List,
since I was not able to find one on http://apps.owncloud.com/, I'm
thinking of writing a simple GPS tracker app for OwnCloud. However, I
first like to know if you think OwnCloud is the right platform for this.

There are several open source projects out there [1,2,3] which have most
of the functionality I look for. There is even an own protocol for
sending location-based information over the internet [4].
However, they lag some features:
1. I already run a OwnCloud server - why install and maintain another
one? :D
2. I want to share my positions with certain people (within a certain
time frame)
3. I want to transfer my positions encrypted
4. I want a simple cellphone app to send my positions periodically
5. I want a simple cellphone app to show me the positions of others on a map
6. I want a simple web app to show me the positions of others on a map

For all features I want, OwnCloud seems the right choice:

1. Check
2. I think the ownCloud file sharing feature can be used for this?
3. HTTPS -> Check
4. Android/iOS Library -> Check
5. Android/iOS Library -> Check
6. OwnCloud / App Framework API -> Check

What do you think?

Cheers,
Nico

I think this is a great idea. So you can track you location but store it only on your own server and not somewhere else.
Very cool! :-)

Cool idea Nico!

For the web interface part it would be best to collaborate with the work-in-progress Maps application. Check it out at http://github.com/owncloud/maps

I would very much like this feature. I would like to be able to track where I am historically, using my phone.

I'm honestly excited about this, I was talking to friends about how it would be a neat thing to have for myself last week, and this fits amazingly into Owncloud, because I want to store this info on my own server, not give it to someone else.

I love this idea! It would be great if I could sync such data to my own
cloud. Right now I am using/testing gps4cam to determine GPS-data for
pictures I take.

I really would look forward to it, I wouldn't need to transfer such
sensitive data to dropbox... :-)
Are you planning a optional offline mode as well?

Best regards
Marcel

Since I want to use as much of OwnCloud as possible: Yes. The tracks /
positions will be saved in files which are handled by the OwnCloud client.

Thanks for the hint. I'll check it out.

Also to the others: Thanks for your comments. They show me I'm on the
right way. However, since I never wrote an app for Android before, I
need to learn that now... How hard can it be? ;)

If anyone wants she or he can start the project or something similar on
github in the meantime - otherwise I will, as soon as my prototype is
running.

Cheers,
Nico

Re: GPS Tracker for OwnCloud

Jan-Christoph Borchardt-4
Hey Nico,

and a great opportunity for collaboration on the Android side is the
OsmAnd app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.osmand
Also open source at https://github.com/osmandapp

OsmAnd is a solid app, already has wide exposure, and a strong
community which can help you on the Android development side.
And best: They already have a plugin for GPX logging:
https://code.google.com/p/osmand/wiki/HowToGpxRecord
Which can also track to online services. They use this syntax:
http://example.com?lat={0}&lon={1}&timestamp={2}&hdop={3}&altitude={4}&speed={5}

So basically it boils down enable the ownCloud Maps app to handle this.
I bet Qingping Hou who develops it (cc'd on this mail), would be really
happy about more contributors. :) And I guess GPX tracking was on the
roadmap anyway so that fits perfectly.

Hi Jan-Christoph,
wonderful! Now this is a great starting point!
I'll take a look at it and talk to Qingping :)
