ownCloud Client Version 2.2.2 Released

Klaas Freitag-3
Hi,

I am happy to announce the ownCloud Client version 2.2.2 today!

Version 2.2.2 is a small bugfix release, it adds two patches on top of
2.2.1 to avoid a unpleasant memory consumption situation.

Because it was just a few patches added, we skipped the beta and rc
phase this time and did a small internal test round instead.

Get your old ownCloud Desktop Client as usual from
https://owncloud.org/install/#install-clients

Regards,

Klaas

for the Desktop Team.

Hi,

Is there no more auto-update notification on Macs?

Yes, there is, but only a couple of days after the release. Means: We
will switch it on in the next couple of days.

Re: ownCloud Client Version 2.2.2 Released

Andrea Croci
Hello Christophe,

if you're on Linux and if you can, I can suggest that you use the apt ppa for that. It does a great job at always pulling the latest version, even before Klaas announces it... :-)

I'm using it for the server too, by the way, and I'm very happy with it.

Great job developers, thank you!

Regards.

Hehe, yes... sometimes the stuff does what it wants :-)

Seriously, the reason for this is: OBS, the build serivce, is not 100%
predictable when all the builds are finished. Usually we start the
builds before the announcement to have builds ready in time. And
sometimes OBS is fast :-)

No problem Klaas, it was not meant to be a critic: just a joke. Keep
doing it the way you have always been doing it: it's great!

Christophe TREFOIS
I’m on a Mac, and as i said, most people are still on 2.1.1 even though there was already a release in between.

Not sure what could be the issue :(

Re: ownCloud Client Version 2.2.2 Released

Christophe TREFOIS
That’s not a few days.

2.2.0 was released 6 weeks ago.

Anyway, I see it’s an issue, and I guess we will just wait for it to be changed.

Best,

We decided against enabling the auto updater for 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 because
both releases unfortunately had quality issues that we did not want to
roll out for all the users.

2.2.2 is good and we will enable the updater next week.

Btw, this is something you can actively influence by writing to this
list if you think the auto updater should be switched on, just don't be
shy. We will either explain... or switch on :-)

Thx,

Klaas

now, that you ask... ;-)

I'd rather like to see a notification mechanism deployed that nags me
every time the client is fired up instead of an auto updater that just
does the the update whenever it feels like.

It's a "full control of one's machine" thing, I believe. ;-)

I see.

I am afraid but I think I am not really in a position to help chenging
this. ;-)

Nonetheless you may want to take my suggestion into account and review
the update process itself.

Cheers,

I am not sure what the point is here. Are you complaining that we should
communicate better why we do not enable the auto updater earlier? Or do
you think we should enable it on release date right away? What is the
lack of communication that you see?

Again, the policy is like this:
We use to enable the auto updater of the client around one week after
the community release. The reason to not do it immediately is that IF
there is a screw up in the new release, we have another chance to fix it.

That did not happen for the 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 case because we found the
quality of both releases not up to the mark, and rather focused on
fixing the probs and releasing a proper version 2.2.2.

We did not say that too loud, that is true.

> I am afraid but I think I am not really in a position to help chenging

That is actually not true. Everybody is in that position if she/he wants
to help, shows as reliable, sustainable and friendly.

There is no reason why releasing needs to be done within the company. If
there are people who want to help with that, we can talk. The only thing
is that releasing is really a very important thing, thus it must be a
very good team doing that, for the good of the project.

regards,

Klaas

Re: ownCloud Client Version 2.2.2 Released

Joel Lord
I have generally been on this list to watch for updates and release
notes, so I've been watching here for a while.  This thread has started
to hit on what has probably been my biggest complaint, so I'll finally
chime in below:

On 6/27/2016 8:39 AM, Klaas Freitag wrote:

My take on Carsten's wording is that the communication surrounding
releases is missing the mark in a key way.  IF the intended primary
upgrade method is the auto updater, the lag between the announced
"release" and the actual release to the updater is very off-putting.  At
this point, I see a "client version X.Y.Z released" message go by and
that tells me that some time in the future my client is going to ask to
upgrade... maybe.  I'm mostly watching the release notes, because the
release announcements don't mean much.

I've got to suggest a few changes to wording.  You're effectively doing
two different release dates for each release, and using the release to
the community as an RC-final rather than a full release. As you said,
"IF there is a screw up in the new release, we have another chance to
fix it."  So can we either get the "Community Release" to be tagged as
RC-final OR as... something else that communicates "Community Release"
(CR?  I don't know.)  OR, can we get "General Availability" for the
final release to the auto updater?  2.2.2-GA would be fine.  I don't
think you'd even need to change the actual version number in the code
between the two, the issue is the communication of the two releases, not
the actuality of the number.  It's silly (IMO) to do an entire release
just to update the version number.  But you're already doing two
notifications, so I'm hoping we can slightly change the language without
adding literally any effort to the job.

Either way, having two release dates with no real distinction between
them is very confusing to those of us users relying on the auto updater
and with no visibility in to the process between the two releases.

Thank you for all that you do, and for the great product.  I'm not even
sure how many people and charity groups I've gotten moved on to ownCloud
in the past couple years.  If this sort of communications issue is the
biggest problem a project has, it's in very, very good shape.  Keep up
the good work.

Hello Klaas and others,

archives of this mailinglist and forum contain many postings regarding
update availability.
For server and client. The delay is not transparent for users. Specially
if the changelog talks security fixes.

If you call this complaining ... please listen to your users.

Sometimes it has been "around a week", sometimes it has been a month
(for the server).
All channels (twitter, news) tell users "hey there is something new out
in the wile". How to get it? Install it manually.
Maybe you can offer update via updater when user call it by menu entry
at tray icon e.g. "Check for updates..."

Listen to the compliments you receive as well :-)

Cheers,
Mark
